Two herdsmen sentenced to 20 years in prison in Delta State for unlawful possession of firearms
A High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State on Monday,
May 16, sentenced two Fulani herdsmen identified as Hassan Abidu and
Yakubu Salem to 20 years in prison with hard labour. Abidu and Salem are
suspected to be members of an armed terrorizing indigenes of Ibusa
community in Delta State.
The herdsmen were arrested on February 23, 2015 after a distress call
was made of a suspected group of Fulani boys seen at Power line, Ibusa
bearing firearms and dangerous weapons.
The
court prosecuted the men on two count charge of unlawful posession of
firearms tendered against them by the Attorney-General of the state,
punishable under Section 3(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special
Provision) Act Cap R.II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria,2010. They
were handed 10 years sentence each with hard labour and without an
option of fine.
